MICROTEACHING 6

Microteaching 6 was special to me becuase it was my team and I who did the teaching. And we also had to make a cake to symbolise the final microteaching session by baking a "birthday" cake which was done beautifully by every group.

The theme was ORIENTAL EXPRESS.

The Dishes were:
  • Lontong
  • Angku Kueh
  • Vadai and Coriandar Chutney
  • Birthday cake (decorated with mango)
First up,
LONTONG

Done by Absa and sheema. FULL OF FLAVOUR. YUMMY!!!

ANGKU KUEH

Done by Jia Li and Laura. I have never tried angku kueh before this. I always thought the filling would be overwhelming but Jia li and laura changed my opinion and let's just say "never judge a book by its cover".

VADAI AND CORIANDAR CHUTNEY

Done by me. Okay, so i am not goin to compliment my own dish but according to what others say, it was good. I am glad that you guys liked it.

AND FINALLY,

"BIRTHDAY CAKE"

There is only one word to describe this "BEAUTIFUL".

Thanks to all my classmates who were supportive, hope you had fun and enjoyed all the food!!!!
Thanks to my team who never gave up till we got it right.
Thanks Si Ni for your photos.
THANKS EVERYBODY!!!

MICROTEACHING 5

SEAFOOD

Today's dishes are:
  • Sweet and sour Crab
  • Grilled Fish in Banana leaf
  • Tempura prawns
The most memorable part of this Microteaching was the techniques involved in particular the gutting of fish and shelling of the crab. The last time i remember gutting a fish was in Secondary school and i was reminded that it was not a pleasant experience.

First up:

Grilled Fish in Banana leaf

The best thing i took home from this was the gutting of the fish. I was so proud of myself, cause i would have never in a million years done that on a voluntary basis.

Tempura Prawns

The prawns look fantastic huh!! I really wanted to eat it, but i am allergic to prawns. Oh yeah, saw the garnish, Sheema did an excellent job. That was one of the skills taught to us (creating a fan garnish - Japanese)

Sweet and sour crab

Sheema busy cooking the crab.

You would think that this took like hours and hours to cook? NOPE! It took less than an hour was really simple. My take home skill was the shelling of the crab. Never done it before, it was actually easy to do.

I learnt alot and had fun at the same time.

BAG WEAVING

Semi-finished bag. Blood and sweat went into making this bag. Okay, no blood was involved. :)

Bright and colourful huh!!!!

MICROTEACHING 3

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

Today's dishes are ......................
  • Carrot cake
  • Garden Veggie Wrap
  • Fruit Trifle
  • Broccoli with leek and mushroom cheese soup

Absa hard at work, try to fill the muffin cases

TA DA

Bottom Left: Carrot cake muffin.
The cake was moist and it bursts with flavour. The plus point of this muffin you cannot taste the carrots and this is important because one of my friends doesn't like to eat carrot but she loves cakes and she always wanted to taste a carrot cake. I am so gonna bake this for her.

Top middle of the picture: Broccoli with leek and mushroom cheese soup
Creamy and cheesy at the same time and my favourite vegetable Broccoli.
What more can you ask for?

Bottom Right: Garden Veggie Wrap
Skill for the day was learning how to parboil cabbage to perfection. Not sure whether i will be able to do it but it did look easy. The filling was Yummy.

At the sides of the Broccoli with leek and mushroom cheese soup: Fruit trifle
YUP!!! Strawberries, peaches, pudding and carrot cake. All in one dish, seriously!!! It was great.

THANK YOU GROUP 3.

VEGETARIAN COOKING

My outlook on vegetarian dishes has been changed. I always thought vegetarian cooking was dull and booorrrring cause only vegetables are used. Seriously, how interesting could the dishes get, right?

Take a look at these photos and maybe you might change your mind too!!!

Top Left corner: Vegetarian pizza with a pesto base.

Top right corner: Sambal Goreng. If you are a fan of tofu and beans, this is the dish you need to try.

Centre: Orange jelly (My Favourite). The jelly was full of orange flavour(freshly squeezed) but most importantly the presentation.
CHECK IT OUT!!!!
The jelly is on the orange peel. We had to carve out the orange pulp and fill it up with orange jelly.
COOL HUH!!!!!

****** MUST TRY DISH********

MICROTEACHING 2

Today's Menu:

  • Baked Chicken Sambal
  • Chakchouka
  • Mutton Masala

BAKED CHICKEN SAMBAL.
Two words: Spicy and Yummy.

CHAKCHOUKA
Once i first saw this name, i expected the dish to be difficult to make but actually it was easy and really interesting to make. Especially when the eggs were poached while cooking the minced chicken. That was my 'take home' skill.

MUTTON MASALA
I am not a fan of mutton but the gravy was creamy and little sour and i liked it cause i like sour food. I know i have weird taste buds.

All the dishes were great.

THANK YOU GROUP 2

MICROTEACHING 1

RICE AND CEREALS.

We were taught three dishes:
  • Tuna Fish Quiche
  • Holiday Cous Cous
  • Penne Pasta with Chicken Grills
This is my team. Absa, Sheema and myself (Premaa).

Teachers hard at work

THE PROCESS
Gathering ingredients and equipment

Chopping and slicing colourful ingredients.

Cooking started!!!

AFTER 3 HOURS OF COOKING

Top left corner: Tuna Fish Quiche. I have always been curious how on a quiche was made and i finally learnt how to make it from scratch.

Top right corner: Holiday Cous Cous. Cous Cous has always been a favourite of mine ever since my university days in Australia. It is my staple food, i don think i can live without eating it at least twice a week.

Centre: Penne pasta with chicken grills. The chicken was yummy because of the herb marinades. Pasta is goes well with anything so the dish was delicious.

OVERALL, THE DISHES TASTED GREAT.

Thank you Group 1.

SOUP, MAIN AND DESSERT!!WHAT MORE CAN U ASK FOR?

Dishes my partner Mavishna and I whipped up during our extra practical time. I think the dishes turned out well J. My favourite was the chocolate lava cake with the ice-cream. HEAVENLY!!!!! You guys, have to try out the recipe. You will not REGRET IT!!!!

SENSORY EXPERIMENTS - HAD A BLAST

PEPSI OR COKE?

I forgot how much fun it was to do sensory testing. My team was in charge of Pepsi challenge. Most people got it right. IMPRESSIVE GUYS!!!!!!!

SMELL A RAT!!!!

This experiment literally took my breath away. Seriously, one minute I was smelling something sweet and the next minute I was smelling curry powder (or what it seems like curry powder). Intense.

CAKE ANYONE!!!!

Cake experiment, I AM SO THERE!!!! I knew one sample was from Sara Lee. That shows how much cake I have eaten huh!!!!

SWEET DRINK!!! YUMMYYY!!!!

This drink was so sweet, it gave me a slight sugar rush which I loved by the way. Sweetness is my weakness.

BABY FOOD WITH A TWIST OF COLOUR

This was by far the most difficult experiment I have ever done. I couldn’t breathe properly and I felt that all the samples tasted the same. I couldn’t even tell whether it was sweet or bitter, it all tasted bland. Moral of the story, sense of smell is very important.

CHEESE!!!!!!

I thought I could identify the different types of cheese without a problem because I like to eat cheese. But I was so wrong!!!! There was a slight difference but the more I ate, the harder it was to differentiate between them.

ONLINE WEB RESOURCES

Online Web Resource No.1 - FUN FOOD FACTS

This website is all about fun facts about food. I mean literally fun facts like “the founder of McDonald's has a Bachelor degree in Hamburgerology”. Its sounds funny right!!! But there is actually a place called Hamburger University and MacDonald’s owns it.

This website could be useful for introducing subjects to students like fast food or can even be used an ice breaker. I think it will be bring an element of humour to the subject.

Online Web Resource No.2 - UNWRAPPED
http://www.foodnetwork.com/unwrapped/index.html

Unwrapped is an awesome show and whoever who is a food lover who has watched will agree with me. This programme is all about uncovering the process behind how commercial products like ice cream, salsa and even Tabasco sauce(which by the way takes years to produce).

This programme is useful for home economics especially when we want to methods of preservation. You can use the videos to show blast freezing methods and of course it can also serve a source of general knowledge for students.

Online Web Resource No.3 - FOOD PYRAMIDS

As we all know, food pyramids are a compulsory subject in home economics and some of our students may already know about it. That is where this website helps. It shows all the food pyramids that are used in the world (Asian, Mediterranean, Latin and many more) and they all differ from one another. This can be used as a bus-stop activity for lower secondary students to compare and contrast pyramids.

Online Web Resource No.4 - KIDS CRAFTS

This website is mainly a crafts website. The interesting part is that they use food to do their crafts. And as you can see from the picture, kids can be creative when they are allowed to think out of the box. I think this website is a good source for ideas for students to get ideas for food presentation especially when they do their food practicals or coursework.
